Weekly Photo Challenge: New Beginning

Happy New Year to all, hope 2014 brings happiness, positivity and courage.

In response to this weeks challenge I was initially going to feature something different. However, with the theme being a ‘New Beginning’ I thought the below photograph and accompanying caption suits better.

A few months ago I wrote a poem called ‘Can Silence Be Heard?‘ which was based on female violence. My poem was recently published in a poetry book and can be read here.

New beginnings don’t just mean a new start to 2014 or simply a new year of work/study. Yet this year, change should be vital. The amount of cases regarding female victims facing rape is shocking. Thus by raising our voice and stepping forward could just make the slight difference. This New Year should definitely be a new beginning of reducing violence. Women should be allowed to roam around in the streets freely without fear of being attacked.

  1. It is a beautiful poem, Meera. Sad but clearly a reflection of the reality. ‘Abused till death, we all need to carry a knife’ – What is worrying is that there are other kinds of rape happening. The ones that are sponsored by the state in order to drive away people and grab their land. All this in the name of ‘development’. The mainstream media tend to play them down(they too have huge stakes, being profit making companies themselves). And those who have ‘carried a knife’ and resisted have been labelled as terrorists.

    • Thank you for your comment Uday, I’m glad you like the poem. Its shocking to believe but indeed very true. And the worse issue about the whole thing is simply the fact that regardless of criminals being punished (but not all- money buying justice) several cases are continuing to increase. Everything you mentioned is true and an eye opener, this of which mostly results down to politics based on selfish treaties. Appalling and somewhat sad to see how the newspapers/internet/social media are filled with articles of the same issue. With several petitions being signed and protests taking place, yet the world seems to back down to square 1 after all. Makes you wonder whether such crimes will ever decrease rather than the other way around.

    • Thank you very much, I’m glad you enjoyed reading my poem. Your kind words are much appreciated.
